MyBlogLog About Me Widget

Aboutme
MyBlogLog is all about connecting people to sites and each other. We strive to make the world wide web a little smaller, a little less anonymous. When you leave your avatar behind on a site that features the MyBlogLog Recent Reader widget, you're not only letting others know that you've been there, you're also leaving a pointer to your MyBlogLog profile where people can learn more about you, sites you author, and other services that you use on the web.

This gets back to something I've written about before, a vision that MyBlogLog can serve as a Domain Name Service (DNS) for people. DNS is a giant, distributed look-up table which turns a machine-readable IP address into something you and I can remember. DNS servers allow us to type yahoo.com into a browser and get to the page at 69.147.90.91.

In this same way, MyBlogLog has always provided an area in your Account page to store pointers to your various profiles that exist across the web. We first made these pointers available as an HTML signature file you could use in email. Based on the positive reception to the "Web 2.0 email signature," Manny Miller, the engineer who put that together, turned it around into a full-fledged widget that you can put onto your site.

There are tons of options on the About Me Widget configuration page. We've got a couple of default color schemes but if you click around the color field you can change pretty much everything you see. You can also select how much or how little you want to show on your About Me widget. Once you like what you see, grab the javascript and paste it into your side bar just like you have done with with Recent Reader widget (we made it the same 180px width so it'll line up nicely).  To access the configuration screen, just login in, click "Edit Profile" and you'll find it under the "Badge" tab.

See you online!

We have a winner!

Feedest
It brings me great pleasure to reveal one of the worst kept secrets on the internet. The winner of last month's MyBlogLog Problogger contest is. . .  Survival of the Feedest. With 477 new members added since the contest was announced on November 8th, Feedest surged in the final week to push past the Buen Amigo who started out strong with an early lead.

The total haul includes:

Leo, congratulations and look out for an email from me.

It was awesome browsing through the leaderboard to see all the great sites out there. We'll be sure to do this again sometime (and figure out how to make it open to non-US folks too!) and just to share the love a little, here's the final tally of the top ten entries and their final member counts.

Site  (community members added between 11/8 - 11/30)

  1. Survival of the Feedest (477)
  2. SEOlogs (424)

  4. Buen Amigo (213)
  5. Collective Thoughts (177)

MyBlogLog and Non-Profits

Net2logoNetsquared.org helps non-profits make better use of Web 2.0 tools to serve their members. Because non-profits have limited resources, leveraging community tools such as delicious, YouTube, and flickr can go a long way towards building your membership and communicating your message. Netsquared has been at the forefront of this and their blog is a great source of information with lots of helpful tutorials.

So when they contacted me to see if I'd be interested in speaking about how MyBlogLog could help non-profit sites build community, I naturally jumped at the chance. The interview was published today and we'll follow it up with my speaking at an upcoming Net Tuesday event in San Francisco on February 12th. If you're around, drop by.

PS. One question that stumped me was a good example of a non-profit using MyBlogLog in a creative way. If you're a non-profit that's using MyBlogLog this is a throw down to you. Share your story!

PPS. We recently added kiva.org to the Services tab so you can point people to your kiva.org lender profile and, in this time of giving, inspire others.

Stay Tuned for a Special Announcement

Time's up! Pencils down!

The contest is over. I hope you've had as much fun as we had browsing the leaderboard during the past month. So many interesting blogs to read out there, really great stuff. We also learned some things about running a contest and will put those lessons to good use next time around.

While we're tallying up the totals, I'll be packing my bags for Las Vegas for the annual gathering of webmasters (remember them?) at PubCon 2007. If you're in the area, do come on by and visit the Yahoo! booth where, at noon on December 5th I'll be announcing the winner.
