Memcached Hackathon in Sunnyvale

Optimus_prime
We nicknamed Chris Goffinet, one of our engineers, Optimus for a reason. Chris lives and breathes optimization and has managed to squeeze an amazing amount of performance from our machines. On a fairly regular basis he'll come in after the weekend and throw out an off-handed comment like, "Oh yeah, i just wrote a little routine that'll give us twice the capacity that we had before,"

Chris' latest interest is in memcached and to share his passion and bring other like-minded engineers together he's hosting an all-night pow-wow with other memcached groupies over at the Yahoo! HQ in Sunnyvale.

If you're around on December 14-15 13-14 for an all-night, pizza-fueled hackathon, swing on by.

If you've never heard of memcached, or things like "pluggable storage backends," stay home, watch a movie, while the engineers take over the world.

Farewell (we’re hiring!)

It is with great regret that I have to write this, but December 1st is my last day here at MyBlogLog.  I'm moving to a different team here at Yahoo!

I will miss all of you very much, and being your Community Manager has truly been a rewarding experience.  I was a big MyBlogLog fan before I came on board here and despite my departure, I'll still remain a huge MBL fan. In the meantime, the collective MyBlogLog team will be holding down the fort but I encourage you to take advantage of several resources should you need help with anything:

You can find me over in nerd-dom at Yahoo! Platforms.  My new official title is crazy long, but here goes:

Product Manager, Developer Tools Yahoo! Platforms

I'm excited to get back to my roots with my new job focusing on the developer community, but I will miss this team and all of you, fiercely.  I still can't believe they pay people to have this much fun in a job. If any of you are interested in applying for the position of Community Manager and are willing to relocate (the position is based in San Francisco), send Ian Kennedy an email (subject: Community Manager) with your qualifications.

Anyhoo, I've got to get back to work, but I wanted to tell all of you the news.

Buttons, Sweet Buttons

Btn_com
I hope you all have been having as much fun as we have checking out all the cool sites that are featured on the top 100 list for the contest.

We marveled at what we thought was an unstoppable early lead by Buen Amigo only to be overtaken most recently by Survival of the Feedest with a recent surge. Standings are updated every 15 minutes so be sure to come back on a regular basis and click on any new links and join those that you like. There's lots of great stuff in there! Root for the underdogs too!

As the contest heads into it's final week, some of you have asked about buttons that will make it easy for your readers to click through to your profile and join your community. I want to give a shout out to Nate Whitehill for his inspired designs which got us thinking. Today, we've added a badge configuration page to your Communities profile where you can select from a number of badges to suit your fancy. You'll find our badges on your Community profile page behind the Buttons link. Manny went a little crazy and built a bunch of buttons. Let us know which ones you like best or, better yet, if you want to make your own - tell us about it!

UPDATE: Be sure to check out Mani Karthik's designs over at DailySEOBlog - he's whipped together a gallery of 20 designs the suit anyone's tastes.

Cleaner, Crisper Userpics

We've updated the compression scheme that Yahoo used when you upload your photos to MyBlogLog for your profile so that it looks *much* better. If you're not happy with your userpic, I encourage you to head on over and re-upload your photo.

  1. Login to MyBlogLog.com (if you haven't already merged your account with a YahooID, this will be your chance to get that out of the way)
  2. Click Edit Profile
  3. Click Change Image
  4. Upload your new image, crop, and save

Sweetness!

It’s Invitational

Invite

Now that we're hooked into the Yahoo backplane, we can take advantage of a couple of things to make things a little easier for you. Tonight we released a new invite feature which takes advantage of the Yahoo Address Book and pulls down your Yahoo address book entries so you can send out invitations to all your friends.

At the bottom of the checklist of names and addresses, we also search the MyBlogLog member database to see if anyone in your address book is already a MyBlogLog member but not connected to you. Each of us on the team here were suprised to find a few long lost friends in there already using MyBlogLog and we didn't even know it. Kind of a "what are you doing here?" moment.

We'll update the Help documents in a few weeks while we give time for this feature to settle in but for the time being, here are some things you should know:

  1. You must be logged into Yahoo to use this feature. MyBlogLog will then access your Yahoo address book to get the list of contacts that you can invite.
  2. If someone isn't in your address book, you can send up to five additional invitations by entering in their email address yourself. You can only have five outstanding invitations at any time. As people accept your invitation and sign up to MyBlogLog, these spaces will free up again.
  3. If your friends have not accepted your invitation to join after two days, you'll have the opportunity to "nudge" them with a follow-up message.
  4. If they have not accepted after five days, their name will be removed and their space will free up again so you can invite someone else a little more responsive to your overtures.

Let us know how it works and, as always, if you find any kinks, let us know in the comments below!

If you're not in the contest, get on in there!

Image Trouble?

We had a hiccup with our image serving system that displays your userpic in the Recent Reader widget. We've identified the problem and are running a script that is fixing this. Afterwards, we'll be making some modifications to prevent this from happening again.

This incident is unrelated to any truck drivers.

UPDATE: GeologyJoe asks images need to be uploaded. The trouble was with our caching layer so thankfully no. We are retrieving all missing images from our database so there will be no need to re-upload your images.

UPDATE: All images are re-loaded and everything should be back to normal. Thanks for your patience everyone!

Gearing Up for Webcom-Montreal

While my French is indeed horrible, I'm going to unleash it in on all of you poor chaps in Montreal tomorrow.  I'm speaking at Webcom-Montreal and I could not be more excited.  I've never been Canada before and I've been told by all my friends that Montreal is absolutely gorgeous, eh.

I'm hoping to meet some of my Canadian friends while there.  Ben Yoskovitz has promised to show me around, and I'm sure I'll spend some time with friends Teresa, Debbie and the other speakers (including Thomas Vander Wal) as well.  I am also set to do an interview with the voice of Blognation Canada, Tris Hussey.

Are you a Canadian blogger?  If so, give me a call so we can meet up.  408-718-0886

Back From BlogWorld Expo

I was so excited to meet so many of you this week at BlogWorld.  While I spent only a few hours in our booth (which was highly rated), I was able to meet other Community Managers at Yahoo!, tons of bloggers, speak at one session, and really enjoy the Vegas nightlife.

I did a little wrap up on my personal blog, but I wanted to make sure you saw these items from that post:

  1. I got to give the Weblog Award for Best Podcast to Leo Laporte.  He mentioned to me that he was a fan of MyBlogLog.  I visibly swooned. ;)
  2. Also, I had some fun with the BlogCatalog guys, but they were very cool about it.  They really were good sports.

As you can tell I spent the whole week just enjoying the heck out of the different parts of the blogosphere that were represented.  I still can't believe they pay me to do this!  Suckers...

US Residents Only: Yeah, Not Fair At All

We are so sorry that we can not do a world-encompassing contest.  I've read your comments and I agree that it chafes.  Our percentage of non-US users is way higher than our percentage of US users and in a perfect world, all of you international users *deserve* a shot at this.  However, we are not yet technically 'internationalized' and for now promotions of this sort, where there is any monetary value, really have to be US only.

Don't lose hope though.  If you are not a US citizen, and you qualify otherwise as the winner, we will still make sure you are promoted adequately.  Heck yeah, you deserve it!
