October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and PinkForOctober.org looks like a great way to get the word out. However, we're cautious types, and we can't quite tell what organization is the right one to support with our linklove. The NBCAM.org site looks legit but carries the following somewhat troubling notice:
"© Copyright 2006 AstraZeneca HealthCare Foundation"
We're thrilled to help get the word out, but we don't want to take part in a Direct-to-Consumer drug marketing campaign if that's what NBCAM happens to be. To be fair, AstraZeneca talks the talk and offers solutions in to the controversies of consumer drug marketing:
AstraZeneca proposed a mandatory requirement for pharmaceutical companies to submit all direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertising to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Division of Drug Marketing and Communication (DDMAC) for review prior to its use. AstraZeneca made the recommendation in written testimony submitted to FDA’s Public Hearing on Consumer-Directed Promotion of Regulated Medical Products.
However, the company certainly focuses on providing financial returns to shareholders. It's a tricky balance. If anyone can educate us about the underlying realities of the NBCAM effort, we'd appreciate it. [Hey BlogHer, shouldn't you be leading the way here?]
For the moment, we're going to point to the breast cancer awareness campaign sponsored by the American Cancer Society. In whatever way you are most comfortable, please join us in Going Pink. Here's some great tips on using pink. Since pink sites can clearly be beautiful, there's simply no excuse not to pinkify.
